01. What it is

What is Gift Aid?

Gift Aid is a UK tax relief that lets eligible charities claim extra money from HMRC on qualifying donations.

For every £1 you give, the charity can usually claim an extra 25p. You do not pay more. The extra amount comes from tax you’ve already paid.

02. How it works

How does Gift Aid work?

Three simple steps turn your donation into a bigger gift for charity.

  1. Step 1

    You donate to charity

Give to any UK charity or community amateur sports club that accepts Gift Aid.

  2. Step 2

    You confirm you’re eligible

Make a Gift Aid declaration confirming you’re a UK taxpayer who has paid enough tax.

  3. Step 3

The charity claims 25p per £1

HMRC pays the charity an extra 25p for every £1 you donated, at no cost to you.

If you donate £10, the charity can claim £2.50 in Gift Aid. That means your donation becomes £12.50.

03. Eligibility

Who can use Gift Aid?

You usually need to be a UK taxpayer and have paid enough Income Tax or Capital Gains Tax to cover the Gift Aid claimed on your donations.

Important: If you have not paid enough tax, HMRC may ask you to pay the difference. Keep your Gift Aid declarations up to date if your circumstances change.

With Legacy, you can support multiple charities through one monthly payment and keep your giving records in one place.

06. Higher rate taxpayers

Higher and additional rate relief

If you pay higher or additional rate tax, the charity still claims Gift Aid in the usual way. You may also be able to claim extra tax relief from HMRC.

Worked example

If you give £100, the charity can claim £25, making the gross donation £125.

  • A higher rate taxpayer may be able to claim £25 in extra relief.
  • An additional rate taxpayer may be able to claim £31.25 in extra relief.

Figures shown are illustrative and based on current HMRC guidance. You can claim relief through Self Assessment.

07. Records

Keeping good records

It’s worth keeping clear records of your donations, especially if you complete a Self Assessment tax return or claim higher rate tax relief.

Legacy keeps your giving organised, so you can see what you gave, when you gave it, and which charities you supported, all in one place.
