  What they do

  Funding research and supporting the 153,000 people in the UK living with Parkinson's.

  Where they focus

  Drug discovery, clinical trials, specialist nurses, local groups, and a national helpline.

  Why it matters

  The largest charitable funder of Parkinson's research in Europe, and the first point of call for newly diagnosed families.

  Why we like them

  They fight on two fronts at once: backing the science that might one day cure Parkinson's, and making the day-to-day of living with it less lonely. Both feel essential, and the helpline volunteers are extraordinary.

  Support, advice and research for the 982,000 people living with dementia in the UK and their carers.

  Where they focus

  Dementia Connect support line, Dementia Friends training, memory cafés, and biomedical research.

  Why it matters

  Dementia is the UK's biggest killer, and most families face it without a roadmap. Alzheimer's Society is that roadmap.

  Why we like them

  What stands out is how much of the work is about the carers too, the spouses and children doing the quiet, exhausting day-to-day. Few charities take that seriously at this scale.

  What they do

  Tackling loneliness in older people through volunteer-led tea parties, phone calls and small social groups.

  Where they focus

  Sunday tea parties, call companions, and activity groups for the over-75s living alone.

  Why it matters

  Chronic loneliness in later life is as harmful to health as smoking. Re-engage treats the cause, not just the symptom.

  Why we like them

  Such a simple idea, done beautifully: a regular cup of tea with the same friendly faces, month after month. We love charities that solve big problems with small, human gestures.
