Stewardship alternative

Legacy vs Stewardship

Stewardship is a Christian charity that has helped people give since 1906, through giving accounts for churches, charities and Christian workers. Legacy is a non-profit giving app for backing any UK cause, with one monthly budget split across as many charities as you like.

Both send your money to good places at a similar cost. The real difference is who you want to give to and how you want to manage it. Here's an honest side by side.

Which one suits you

Choose Stewardship if

A strong home for Christian giving

  • You give to your church, or to individual Christian workers and Bible college students.
  • You want to load a giving account by card, cheque or Direct Debit, then choose gifts from the balance.
  • You plan to give shares, property or a gift in your will, or run a company giving account.
  • You value a charity with more than a century of history behind it.

Choose Legacy if

Built for backing any UK cause

  • You want to back causes across health, animals, climate, poverty and more, all in one place.
  • You'd rather set one monthly budget and have it split automatically, with no balance to manage.
  • You want to see what your charities achieve, through a positive news feed and an impact tracker.
  • You want your contact details kept off charity marketing lists by default.

Stewardship details from stewardship.org.uk, checked October 2026. Stewardship also offers company giving, donor-advised funds and gifts of shares, property and legacies, which Legacy doesn't.

Where £20 a month lands

A £20 monthly gift from a UK taxpayer, with Gift Aid, before any optional tip. The bar is out of £25, what the charity would get if nothing came off at all.

Stewardship£24.12

£20 plus £5 Gift Aid, less a 3.5% fee of 88p.

Legacy£23.87

£19.25 after 3.75% third-party costs, plus £4.62 Gift Aid.

Stewardship comes out about 25p ahead. On Legacy, none of the 3.75% is ours: it covers Stripe, which collects your Direct Debit, and Charities Trust, which pays your charities and claims Gift Aid. Legacy runs on optional tips instead.

What you get with Legacy

Every cause

One portfolio, any cause

Mental health, cancer research, rescue animals and climate, side by side. Add as many charities as you like and split one monthly budget between them however you want.

Your impact

See what your giving does

A positive news feed brings stories from the charities you back, not fundraising appeals. The impact tracker charts your giving month by month.

Full control

Change it from your phone

Adjust your budget, add a cause, skip a month or pause the lot in the app. No phone calls, no cancellation period, and your yearly tax summary is a tap away.

So, what is Legacy?

The UK's first non-profit giving app. Pick the causes you care about, set one monthly budget, and Legacy splits it between them. One Direct Debit covers the lot.

Change the split, add a cause, or pause the whole thing from your phone. Gift Aid is handled for you, and your yearly tax summary is ready when Self Assessment comes round.
