Nepal floods appeal

On 26 August a glacier collapse above the Langtang valley sent a surge of water and debris down the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers. Villages across Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading were cut off. Four charities are on the ground now.

Four charities with teams in the flood-hit districts, each covering a different part of the response: shelter and family tracing, children's safety, health and emergency supplies, and clean water.

    5emergency camps for displaced families

    On the ground

    • Supporting search and rescue in the first days after the floods
    • Handing out tarpaulins, blankets, rope, first aid kits, water and food
    • Restoring Family Links volunteers helping people find their loved ones
    • A generator in Rasuwa to keep communications running

    Where

Rasuwa and the other flood-hit districts

    Why we back them

Restoring Family Links is the part we keep coming back to. After a flood like this, knowing a parent or a brother is safe matters as much as a blanket, and the Red Cross is one of the few organisations set up to do it.

    Save the Children

    Registered Charity: 213890

    6,100+people supported so far

    On the ground

    • Clean drinking water for affected families
    • Counsellors for children, with local partner TPO Nepal
    • Temporary learning spaces so children keep learning
    • Tracing families and preventing trafficking in displacement sites

    Where

    Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading

    Why we back them

They noticed the shelters themselves were becoming a risk, overcrowded and stuffy, and said so publicly. Speaking up for what children actually experience is exactly what we want from a children's charity.

    On the ground

    • Hygiene kits, buckets, soap and water purification for thousands of people
    • Therapeutic food, newborn kits and bed nets
    • Medical tents with mental health support for children
    • Temporary learning centres, and emergency cash for families

    Where

    Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading

    Why we back them

Paying emergency cash through Nepal's own social protection system is the unglamorous plumbing that gets money to families fast. Supplies stocked in advance mean the response doesn't wait for the shipping.

    On the ground

    • Hygiene kits and water purification for families in Rasuwa
    • Setting up temporary shelters
    • More water, sanitation and hygiene kits on the way
    • Working through long-standing Nepali partner organisations

    Where

    Rasuwa, Dhading and Nuwakot

    Why we back them

Water and sanitation are what stop a flood turning into an outbreak, and Oxfam is one of the most experienced at it. Working through Nepali partners means the help is shaped by people who know these valleys.
